Advanced Presentation - Social Awareness

The semester-long project asked students to develop an advertising campaign to promote involvement and awareness to issues affecting their societies.

The purpose of this project is:

  • To become aware of the designer’s social responsibility to the public
  • To learn about an important issue and its impact on society, nature and human health
  • To understand how to convey a message graphically

In addition students had to focus their campaigns on specific age groups, taking into account the literacy rate at the time was estimated at around 20%, so in many cases the graphics were supposed to contain the entire message without the use of words.

Health + Sanitation

Student designer:  Nimrod Torie, 2012

The use of Buai (Metal nut) in Papua New Guinea is widespread for its value as a quick pick-me-up and appetite depressant.  Unfortunately, it is linked to oral cancer and the sharing of 'lime' and 'mustard,' as well as the spit which covers the ground, all leading to the spread of infectious diseases.

Nimrod focused on the physical appearance of Buai's use to dissuade young people from picking up the habit (right).  The evolution of his logo (above right) uses the iconic shape of spit that litters the sidewalks and roads.

Air Pollution

Student designer:  Lekei Kilala, 2011

Lekei was concerned about air pollution caused by vehicular use.  She reminds her target audience of the damage to their health in hopes that they will in turn take better care of their environment.  Her graphics were inspired by the clouds of smoke seen floating behind the many old PMVs (Public Motor Vehicles) around town.

Environmental Pollution

Student Designer:  Bolenai Haledai, 2012

PNG is the home of various, poorly regulated, mining sites.  Bolenai's infographic focuses on illustrating the extent of the impact to the physical land of her country in order to raise awareness among her fellow countrymen.

Air Pollution

Student Designer:  Daniel Debra, 2012

Old tires are often burned for amusement, especially during the festive season, and Daniel wanted to teach others about the danger to our environment and health of this activity.

Domestic Violence Environmental Graphic

Student Designer: Kimberley Didei, 2011

Domestic Violence and the treatment of women is one of the largest social issues in Papua New Guinea.  Kimberley created a series of graphics resulting in the concept of the hand reaching out to stop domestic violence.  The final stage of the design was to create an environmental graphic, something that creatively intersected with the built environment, to raise awareness.  Her concept was to have the hand coming out of poster / building to draw attention to her sign and the issue.

Water Pollution Logo

Student designer:  Karl Aisi

There is little awareness of the affect of garbage and other pollutants among many Papua New Guineans.  Karl's project aimed to increase this awareness among his fellow citizens by emphasizing the affect it has on their food.

Water Supplies

Student designer:  Penua Hila-Cook

Penua's overall focus was about keeping our water clean.  In his final poster he focused on future concerns about future shortages:

If 50 percent of the world's water supplies were to run out, the only option left would be to protect the last drops available to us...with our lives.
